Biofuel and Biochemical
Competitive edge in bio-economy development
Biofuel & biochemical industry is an industry group that is expected to grow fast in the future. Significantly, Thailand has high potential in this industry due to the availability of raw materials such as cassava, etc., currently being the world’s largest exporter of cassava. In addition, Thailand also has well-developed chemical industry and ethanol fuel industry.
Well-known for biodiversity and natural resources
Build strong technological capabilities on behalf of the R&D group consisting of 2 research institutes and 15 universities, altogether 190 researchers.
Thailand – a land of rich bio-resources
Thailand, a world leader in agriculture, has a strong foundation for producing agricultural products especially the country’s main sugarcane and cassava plantations which are within the EEC zone. Moreover, Thailand also has an ecosystem that facilitates the development of biofuel & biochemical industry.
Policy to support green economy
Thailand has set a target of biodiesel consumption at 14 million liters/day and bioethanol at 11.3 million liters/day by the year 2036. Thailand currently has the capacity to produce Polylactic Acid (PLA) up to 20,000 tons/year. Moreover, certain resources have also been allocated for R&D and various research centers in support of this industry, such as Thailand Science Park, the National Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (BIOTEC), Thailand Center of Excellence for Life Sciences (TCELS) and Petroleum Institute of Thailand (PTIT), etc.
